What's actually included in a monthly retainer?

Each engagement includes weekly working sessions with your product and engineering teams, async design review on in-flight work, strategy contribution on product direction, hands-on design on highest-stakes flows, design system contributions, and stakeholder facilitation. The retainer caps at 80 hours per month for protection, but the engagement is sold on outcomes and access, not tracked hours. A clear scope document is written at kickoff and refreshed quarterly.

What does the first month actually look like?

The first 30 days are structured: stakeholder interviews with your product, engineering, and leadership teams in week one; an audit of the current state and design system in weeks two and three; a strategy alignment workshop with your team at the end of week four. By day 30, the scope is locked, the priorities are clear, and the actual design work begins. The kickoff is built into every engagement length because shipping without alignment is how engagements fail.

What happens if the engagement isn't working out?

The first 30 days of every engagement include a no-fault exit clause. If we hit day 30 and the fit isn't right for either of us, we end cleanly with no further obligation beyond the work already delivered. After day 30, the engagement runs for the agreed term, with monthly reviews that catch problems before they escalate. The contract specifies a kill fee of 50% of remaining contract value, which protects both sides. You have an out, and I have predictability for the months I've blocked off for you.
